The Grade 1, $257,208 Graham Paint & Appaloosa Futurity was contested at 350 yards with an all-Paint horse field of nine in the top race for the breed this season. Rio Rojo Jessie crossed the finish line first but would be disqualified for interference about halfway through the race. Girls Got Grip was elevated from second position to first with the new results.
Owned by the Girls Got Grip LLC of Black Hawk, S.D. and trained by Heath Taylor, Girls Got Grip was ridden by Cody Jensen. The 2-year-old filly, a full-sister to Paint racing legend Got Country Grip, added the Graham final to her score in a qualifying trial for the event.
Girls Got Grip was 8-1 in the wagering and paid $19.60 to win, $7.20 to place and $4.80 to show. Shawne Wind paid $16.20 to place and $8.60 to show. Memory Keeper, the beaten 4-5 wagering favorite, was third and paid $3 to show.
Bred in Oklahoma by Linda Fox, Girls Got Grip is a daughter of Country Quick Dash from the Super de Kas mare Got A Grip. She earned $97,743 for her Graham triumph to boost her overall bankroll to $111,625. Photo: Larry Larson.
